On the 22nd of October 2020 the World Maritime University Women’s Association (WMU WA) hosted the Class of 2020 executive committee Farewell and Handover Event via Zoom.
On the 22nd of October 2020 the World Maritime University Women’s Association (WMU WA) hosted the Class of 2020 executive committee Farewell and Handover Event via Zoom.
The President of the WMU Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry gave a goodwill message in which she noted that: today, roughly 36 per cent of the students in the Malmö MSc programme are females. This is a significant improvement since the University was founded in 1983 when women made up only two per cent of the Malmö MSc enrolment. Although this entails moving towards the right direction, much more needs to be done to promote professional women in maritime and support their roles in the maritime and ocean sectors.

The new executive committee of Class of 2021 comprises nine (9) members representing eight (8) countries (Liberia - Uganda - Ghana - Egypt - Philippines - Nigeria - Argentina - Cameroon).

Their role is to establish a platform for discussing a number of issues, not just about gender, but also environmental and technical issues. Their goal is raising awareness and narrowing the gap of the institutional barriers and cultural stigma faced by women who enter the maritime industry.

Thanks to the outgoing leadership of the WMU WA for a job well done in keeping the association vibrant, organizing the turnover ceremony and amending the constitution despite the challenges they faced, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
